The San Rafael Swell is a place with deep history and narrow canyons. You drive through it on I-70 as you pass through Utah, and most folks I talk with don’t know about the hiking and historical artifacts all around them. Indigenous people have left their marks on the canyon walls, and Western settlers and outlaws scratched out a living before moving on. Meanwhile, the cactus still bloom.
My wife and I have hiked and rappelled many of the canyons in the southern Swell. It is one of my favorite places in the American Southwest.
Thanks to the BLM for continuing to manage this special place.
And thank you ISS43 for the amazing satellite photo of the Swell. Image courtesy of the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit, NASA Johnson Space Center. ISS043-E-182498 (http://eol.jsc.nasa.gov).
